Notes are marked up, practice questions worked through, and the big exam is now just over a week away. You’ve already put in the hard yards. This final stretch is where many students lose their edge. It’s not because they don’t know the material, but because they try to reinvent the wheel with late-night sessions, endless rereading, and rising panic.

A smarter approach will reap bigger rewards. The last 7-10 days before exams aren’t for trying to absorb brand new material. It’s about converting what you already know into performance you can actually access under pressure.

Structuring the Final 7–10 Days

Rather than treating every day like a study marathon, divide the final 7-10 days into three carefully planned study blocks. Spend the first few days focusing on content review with light question practice. Go through your notes, summaries, and lists of weak areas. Instead of rereading entire chapters, scan for the high-yield concepts that you’re still struggling with. Spend around 60% of your time on this and 40% on question reviews. The goal is to refresh your memory, not reprogram it.

Flip the script for the next few days, spending 70% of your time on questions and timed blocks. Use your remaining time for targeted review of your weak areas. When you miss something, make a brief one-sentence note explaining why and use these notes as the basis for your content review. Keep reviews short and focused on the material that keeps tripping you up. Build rest periods, exercise, and nutritious meals into each day.

The last couple of days, rest up with some light review. This is the taper period before your race. Skim your summary sheets and run through flashcards in 45-60 minute sessions. Then stop. Remember your brain needs this downtime to consolidate your learning. Avoid last-minute cramming the night before the exam. Instead, focus on a good night’s sleep.

Simulated Exam Conditions and Timed Practice Blocks

Simulated exam sessions are non-negotiable because knowing the material is only half the battle. Performing under pressure is the other half. Aim for three full practice sessions in the final week under real exam conditions. Schedule them for the same time of day as the actual exam, the same length, same rules (no phones or notes). Use a timer and stick to it. When the buzzer goes, you’re done. If it’s a practical exam, make sure you have the same equipment and setup. This helps train your pacing and stress response.

To sharpen your weaker areas without the full mental load, run shorter timed blocks that focus on one section or question type. After each session, spend 15-20 minutes reviewing where you went wrong. Make a note of how you felt during each session. Did you rush? Start second-guessing yourself? Run out of time? Recognizing these patterns will help you adjust accordingly in your next session.

Physical and Mental Preparation

Your brain is a high-performance engine. It’s important to feed and rest it like one. Sleep is the single highest return on investment activity in the week before exams. Aim for a consistent 7.5–9 hours each night—No heroic all-nighters. Stop studying at least 90 minutes before bed, so your mind can wind down.

Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated just healthy, well-balanced meals while avoiding the sugar rollercoaster of energy drinks and candy. It’s important to stay hydrated. On the morning of your exam, eat something familiar that sits well. This is not the day to experiment with a new breakfast burrito.

Anxiety management is vital. Create a short pre-exam routine: three deep breaths and a quick visualization of being calm and ready. During the exam, if your mind starts spinning—put your pencil down, plant both feet on the floor, and take one slow breath. It works because it interrupts the panic loop.

Test-Day Tactics: Multiple-Choice and Practical Exams

For multiple-choice exams, answer every question you know first, then loop back. Eliminate obviously wrong answers before weighing the remaining options. Watch for absolute language (“always,” “never”) in answer choices. Don’t second-guess a first instinct without a concrete reason to change it.

Practical exams test process as much as knowledge. Develop a sequence you follow every time so you don’t skip critical steps under pressure. If you make a mistake, correct it calmly and keep going. Examiners notice composure. Practice the physical flow (instrument handling, patient positioning, calculation steps) until it feels automatic. Muscle memory is your friend when the clock is ticking.

Post-Exam Recovery and Analysis

The exam ends. Now what? First, recover. Give yourself a real break—sleep, eat, and chill with friends. Resist the urge to immediately start dissecting every answer. That spiral helps no one.

Within 24–48 hours, do a calm debrief while the experience is still fresh. What went well? Where did you lose time or points? Were there content gaps or process gaps? Write it down. It’s not about punishment. It’s data collection for the next cycle. Students who improve the most treat every exam as feedback, not a final judgment.

The final week is about converting knowledge into performance with clarity and control. Follow a structure, protect your energy, practice under pressure, and execute with intention. You’ve got this.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
References

Sleep Smarter to Unlock Your Study Potential

https://www.elsevier.com/promotions/study-med-school-study-success-a-guide-for-med-students

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/overcoming-testing-anxiety-part-2-test-day

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/overcoming-testing-anxiety-part-1

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/why-sleep-is-so-important-during-your-healthcare-training

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/the-ultimate-list-of-osmosis-from-elsevier-study-tips

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/how-to-manage-excessive-exam-anxiety

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6920642

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4673073

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40670-024-02175-w

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32485517

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10597963

https://www.osmosis.org/learn/Test-taking_strategies:_Nursing_student_success
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34512066/

</details>

By: Lynda Malcolm, JD, MD Exam week is looming.
