It all feels important. Success comes from realizing what matters and what doesn’t. The students who crush medical school aren’t the ones suffering through late nights and endless study. They’re the ones who have figured out that only a small portion of their study (20%) produces the majority of their results (80%). So how do you get ruthless?

1. Identify the 20% of Study Activities that Drive Results

Start by identifying the 20%. Take time to go through your last few tests. Be brutally honest about the activities that predicted performance. This usually includes timed question blocks, deliberate focus on weak topics, and reviewing spaced-repetition decks. Everything else, whether it’s color-coding notes, rewatching lectures, or making elaborate study sheets, rarely makes a dent in results. Focus on those high-impact activities like your life depended on it and treat the rest as optional.

2. Prioritize Active Recall and Spaced Repetition Over Passive Re-reading

Passively reading notes feels productive not because it works, but because it is familiar. You convince yourself you’re learning. Newsflash: You’re not. Active recall, where you force your brain to retrieve information under pressure (flashcards, practice questions, explaining concepts out loud), works much better. Partner this with spaced repetition systems that schedule retrieval at the optimal moment, and you get retention that actually lasts. The shift will be tough at first, but it’s the highest-leverage change you can make.

3. Decide which resources deserve the most time

You don’t need to study every resource. You need to study the right resources. The Crash Course Series is key. Use it as a scaffold that you annotate over time. Lecture notes fill specific gaps that your school might emphasise. Spend the lion’s share of your time on question banks because they deliver the best return and expose weak areas. A rough split that works is spending around half your study time on question banks, a quarter using active recall tools, and the remainder on reference texts and lecture notes.

4. Run a Weekly Audit and Cut the Dead Weight

Once a week, honestly evaluate what you did and ask:

Which activities improved my understanding or scores this week?

Which activities felt productive but produced nothing measurable?

What am I still doing out of habit or fear of missing out?

Cut any activities that didn’t move the needle. This weekly check is vital. It’s where the 80/20 rule is enforced. Without it, low-value habits creep back in because they feel comfortable.

5. Real Students, Real Turnarounds

Tracking your results and protecting high-yield work will lead to better results. The gain comes from dropping activities that never correlated with performance, not from studying longer. Swapping rewriting lectures into color-coded outlines for a daily question bank block and Osmosis Flashcard reviews will see your test results improve dramatically. The 80/20 rule isn’t a gimmick. It’s a survival filter. Stick to the plan, and it will become less overwhelming.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
References

https://www.psychologicalscience.org/journals/pspi/1529100612453266

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/active-recall-the-most-effective-high-yield-learning-technique

https://www.osmosis.org/blog/easy-ways-to-integrate-active-recall-and-spaced-repetition-into-your-curriculum

https://www.elsevier.com/promotions/study-success-at-med-school

https://www.psychologicalscience.org/journals/pspi/1529100612453266

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40670-026-02643-5

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40670-025-02487-5

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19930508

https://www.psychologicalscience.org/journals/psychological-science/j.1467-9280.2006.01693.x

</details>

By: Lynda Malcolm, JD, MD Med school throws an impossible volume of material at you.
