{"id":12587,"date":"2026-08-12T20:26:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studenthub.elsevier.com\/en\/?p=12587"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:26:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:26:18","slug":"making-a-better-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studenthub.elsevier.com\/en\/blog\/making-a-better-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Becoming a\u00a0Doctor: What They Don&#8217;t Teach You About Making a Diagnosis\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Content adapted from:&nbsp;2020 Elsevier&nbsp;Live Webinar with Dr. David Randall.&nbsp;Diagnosis; The art of becoming a doctor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important skills in medicine is also one of the least taught: how to actually make a diagnosis.&nbsp;Dr. David Randall, renal specialist, researcher, and co-editor of Kumar &amp; Clark&#8217;s Clinical Medicine \u2014 shared some refreshingly honest insights in a 2020 webinar&nbsp;on the art and psychology of diagnosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether&nbsp;you&#8217;re&nbsp;just starting medical school, clinical placements, or&nbsp;preparing for&nbsp;finals, his advice is the kind&nbsp;you&#8217;ll&nbsp;benefit from having on day one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Randall&#8217;s Tips for Better Diagnosis<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tip #1: ask why<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every patient is unique: their background, travel history, lifestyle, and life events all shape their risk&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask questions that push past surface symptoms to understand&nbsp;what&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>specific<\/em>&nbsp;about this person&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Tip #2: Describe&nbsp;Accurately<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practise&nbsp;summarising&nbsp;a patient&#8217;s presentation in a single sentence&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The timeline&nbsp;alone (seconds vs days vs months) can point you towards vascular, infective, or degenerative causes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"is-style-plain has-base-background-color has-background has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If you can accurately describe what a patient&nbsp;presented&nbsp;with, you are well on your way to making a good diagnosis.&#8221;&nbsp;&#8211; <strong><em>Dr. David Randall<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Tip&nbsp;#3:&nbsp;Rare Things Are Common<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think Horses not Zebras \u2014 but stay open if the picture&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;quite fit&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a busy A&amp;E seeing 20 patients, statistically at least one may have something unusual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Tip&nbsp;#4:&nbsp;Always Ask:&nbsp;What&#8217;s&nbsp;the Urgency?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the patient well or unwell?
