It\u2019s testing whether you can use that knowledge in a clear, safe and human way, while someone is watching and the clock is ticking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of us start OSCE revision with the same plan: Find a station list, open a textbook, promise ourselves we\u2019ll practise with friends later, then somehow spend two hours rewriting notes. It probably feels productive, but it isn\u2019t the most effective way to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t confuse \u201cknowing it\u201d with being able to do it<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written exams mostly test recognition and factual recall. OSCEs test performance under time pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means passive revision has a ceiling. Reading a page on asthma might help you understand the condition, but it won\u2019t automatically help you explain inhaler technique, take a focused shortness of breath history, or respond calmly when a patient says they\u2019re scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good OSCE station usually needs three things working together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clinical knowledge, so you know what matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure, so you have a framework you can fall back on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication (both verbal and non-verbal), so the patient understands you and feels listened to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If one of those is missing, the station starts to fall apart. That is why OSCE revision needs to be active. You have to practise retrieving the information, saying it out loud, and adapting it to the person in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build frameworks, not scripts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of students try to memorise perfect OSCE scripts. It makes sense at first, especially when you\u2019re anxious and want something tried and tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that scripts are fragile. If the patient gives an unexpected answer, or the examiner asks a slightly different question, you get caught off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frameworks are much more useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, in a history station, you don\u2019t need to memorise every line. You need a structure that you can adapt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with the presenting complaint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explore the history of presenting complaint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask about red flags early enough that you do not forget them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you ICE (Ideas, Concerns &amp; Expectations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover relevant systems, past medical history, medication and allergies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include social history and what matters to the patient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow time for questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summarise and explain what happens next<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact wording can change. The structure stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same applies to examination stations. You want a clear order that becomes automatic, because in the exam you do not want to waste half your brainpower wondering what comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practise the little things as well<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boring parts of an OSCE are usually where the easiest marks can be gained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening the station properly, checking the patient is comfortable, washing your hands, explaining what you\u2019re doing, summarising at the end. None of this is glamorous, but it makes you look safe and organised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practise saying simple lines like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ll just wash my hands.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCan I confirm your name and age?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAre you comfortable at the moment?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWould it be okay if I examined you?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ll explain what I\u2019m doing as I go along.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cTo summarise what you\u2019ve told me\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These phrases sound obvious, but they are easy to forget when you\u2019re nervous. It is more useful to separate the topic into the types of stations you might face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, cardiology could become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>History stations:<\/strong> Chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Examination stations:<\/strong> Cardiovascular examination, peripheral vascular examination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skills stations:<\/strong> ECG interpretation, bloods, cannulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Explanation stations:<\/strong> Heart failure, hypertension, anticoagulation, lifestyle advice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds simple, but it helps you organise your revision properly. Instead of just thinking, \u201cI need to revise cardiology\u201d, you start thinking, \u201cHow would this topic show up in an OSCE?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have chosen a station, ask yourself the practical questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What am I trying to rule out?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the red flags?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What examination findings matter?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would I explain to the patient?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What might the examiner ask me at the end?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where a tool like StudyFinder AI can be useful without replacing the actual practice. Use a timer. Record a voice note. Practise with a friend. Explain a condition to yourself in the mirror if you have to. It\u2019ll probably feel uncomfortable at first, but that\u2019s normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you watch or listen back, you\u2019ll notice things you completely missed in the moment. Maybe your explanation takes too long. Maybe you keep saying \u201cum\u201d. Maybe your history jumps around. Maybe you sound like you\u2019re listing questions rather than actually speaking to a patient. Maybe you know the management but can\u2019t explain the reasoning clearly enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of feedback is hard to get from passive revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would even practise with one minute less than the real station time. If your station is eight minutes, practise doing it in seven. In the real exam, you may lose time because the patient gives a long answer, you forget a step, the examiner interrupts, or you need a few seconds to think. Training slightly under time gives you a buffer for those unknowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A simple OSCE revision loop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most useful way to revise isn\u2019t to separate \u201clearning\u201d and \u201cpractising\u201d completely. If you want your performance to improve, you need to complete the full cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OSCEs aren\u2019t about becoming a perfect actor or memorising a flawless script. They are about being safe, structured and understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students who improve fastest are usually not the ones who collect the most resources.
