The following tips are game changers when it comes to how you approach learning the complex subject of Anatomy. We hope these anatomy study tips and learning techniques improve your academic success!
TIP 1 : There are no shortcuts, but you can make your learning as efficient as possible.
• Relax, you won’t remember every single thing and that’s okay.
• Brains can only deal with small chunks of information at a time. So, read or listen for a short time (approx. 20 min) then do something active.
TIP 2 : Get creative & interact with the content
• Use pens, eyeliner, body paint, clay and pipe cleaners to draw and model structures.
• Create visual representations e.g. use strawberry laces to map out blood supply.
• Use your own body (safely).
• Annotate lecture slides and images from books to reinforce what you have learned.
TIP 3: How to nail lab sessions by engaging in the 3 phases of learning
Before
• Eat & hydrate
• Look at the notes & know what you are doing
During
• What is it? Find things that you recognize first and work from there
• Use your hands –. Neural pathways come through our hands to our brains. It’s proven neuroscience; it will increase your learning.
After
• Draw, teach, test.
• Review & condense what you have learned.
TIP 4 : Teach others
• Research has repeatedly shown that anatomy students improve learning outcomes when teaching each other.
• It can improve knowledge, confidence and you help others. it’s a win-win.
*Flashcards, like those from Gray’s Anatomy for students, are a great way of learning with friends. Quiz, discuss and explain the content to each other. It boosts your understanding and is fun!
TIP 5 : Building blocks
• Build a framework and build up your knowledge bit by bit.
• Learn names & remember by using mnemonics & rhymes.
• Rehearse your knowledge – go through things several times.
